Construction of Kazakhstan’s first nuclear power plant has
begun in the Almaty region with the participation of Rosatom. The announcement
was made by the corporation’s head, Alexey Likhachev, during a meeting with
Kazakh Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov. The parties discussed measures to
increase local content in goods and services, as well as issues related to
localizing the nuclear fuel cycle and establishing an international consortium
with leading Kazakh and foreign partners. The Russian side confirmed its
readiness for broad cooperation, while Bektenov noted that the project is under
the President’s supervision and will receive full government support.
