Kazakh film ‘Akyn’ wins top prize at film festival in Portugal

The film by Kazakh director Darezhan Omirbayev entitled ‘Akyn’ (or ‘Poet’) has won another international award. This time it has received the Best Film Award at a film festival in Portugal. The movie tells the story of a poet who is afraid of being misunderstood and irrelevant in the digital age. The movie script is based on a story by the German writer Hermann Hesse entitled ‘Author's Evening’. The film was shot in Almaty city, Almaty region, and Atyrau. The main character was played by famous singer and musician Yerdos Kanayev. The movie had its world premiere in 2021 in the competition at the 34th Tokyo International Film Festival in Japan, where it won the Best Director Award. And earlier this year, it was screened out of competition at the 72nd Berlin International Film Festival in Germany. ‘Akyn’ was also named the Best Film at the film festival in Brazil. The movie will be released in cinemas in France on December 14.
