Water
resources are a strategic asset for Kazakhstan. Sustainable development,
environment, and regional stability all depend directly on them. This was
stated by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev during a
meeting with the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy on Water, Retno Marsudi.
The Head of State emphasized the particular importance of establishing
effective international cooperation in this area. According to President
Tokayev, his initiative to establish an International Water Organization under
the auspices of the UN will strengthen coordination between countries. Issues
relating to the establishment of this body and its prospects are expected to be
discussed on the sidelines of the upcoming Regional Ecological Summit in
Astana. Coordinated approaches to addressing global water-related issues are
also planned to be developed at the UN Water Conference, which will take place
in Abu Dhabi in December. The two sides also paid special attention to the
efficient use of water resources in Central Asia.
