Foreign experts praise Kazakhstan’s contribution to
international security and nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation. These are
among the priority areas of Kazakhstan’s foreign policy. President of the UN
General Assembly Csaba Korosi commended Kazakhstan for its efforts and role in
the global anti-nuclear movement. He also urged to ensure that the
ban on nuclear testing is legally binding for all countries. Japanese
specialists of the international peace organization particularly emphasize that
many anti-nuclear initiatives in Kazakhstan have already received wide support
in the international community. The country now continues to work in this
direction.
“Kazakhstan plays a pivotal role in the international arena in supporting and promoting the anti-nuclear movement. We are closely cooperating with the Kazakh delegation on victim assistance, non-proliferation of nuclear weapons and education. As for assistance, today there is the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), under which a working group has been set up. This year it is led by Kazakhstan, and I think we will have good news,” said Hirotsugu Terasaki, Director General of Peace and Global Issues, Japan.
Kazakhstan is currently working on launching a fund to
assist victims of nuclear tests. It is being developed in cooperation with
partners in the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW). According
to the Kazakh Foreign Ministry, it is expected that by the second conference of
the Treaty, which will be held at the end of autumn in New York, the document
enshrining the mechanisms of the organization’s work will be ready.
