Fifth round of international Silk Way Star contest held in Astana

The fifth episode of the international vocal contest Silk Way Star took place last weekend. This time, the participants showcased the culture and history of their countries, each performing a song in their native language. The standout of the competition was Saro Gevorgyan from Armenia, who topped the rankings. His powerful performance, blending traditional music with elements of rock, captivated both the audience and the judges.

«This time I was really excited and had spent a long time preparing for this performance. For me, it was the most important stage of the competition — a chance to share the story of my country. I wanted to show the judges all my emotions and everything I’d been working toward. I was a little nervous since I was performing a popular Armenian folk song, but I really wanted to convey the depth and uniqueness of our culture through it. When I saw the judges’ scores, I knew I had succeeded,» Gevorgyan said.

The South Korean band Kandis almost dropped out of the competition after scoring the fewest points. However, Kazakh jury member Zhanar Dugalova exercised her right of veto and kept the girl group in the project. Notably, this privilege is granted only to jury members from the host countries — Kazakhstan and China.

«I really like this group. I believe they are worthy participants in this project. It’s the only group in the competition, so why not support them? Throughout the project, they’ve already gained their own fans. I think it was the right decision — these girls still have many exciting performances ahead,» Dugalova said.

After all five rounds, Kazakh singer ALEM and Michelle Joseph from Mongolia share the top spot in the overall standings.
