Domestic scientists are researching structural materials that can be used in nuclear energy. They intend to develop and propose lightweight yet durable components resistant to ionizing radiation, based on polymers and ceramics. This would provide an alternative to heavy metals like lead, which are traditionally used in the construction of nuclear power plants. Experts discussed the prospects of using the peaceful atom at the President’s Affairs Administration of Kazakhstan.
«It is important to understand that peaceful nuclear energy and military nuclear energy are different things. A peaceful atom can serve the greater good. To increase production capacities, we need new electricity generation sources. Therefore, nuclear power plants are practically a non-alternative source of electricity,» said Malik Kaliyekperov, researcher of the Kazakh Institute of Nuclear Physics.
It is worth reminding that the decision to hold a nationwide referendum on the construction of a nuclear power plant was announced by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev in his state-of-the-nation address. Today, the meeting participants discussed the key aspects of the document in detail.
«This state-of-the-nation address is closely related to the one from 2023 as it discusses the issues of economic development, infrastructure, and legal
support. The action plan for this year includes around 78 different directions,
with over 67 of them planned for execution by the government. This encompasses
areas related to the social sector, healthcare, and monetary policy,» noted Almas Kanatov, Executive Director of the Institute of Parliamentarism.
