Representatives of all ethnic groups living in Kazakhstan in peace and harmony celebrated the Spring Equinox. Festivities in honor of Nauryz Meiramy were held at the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan. Snow-white yurts and traditional swings called altybakans were set up, and a generous dastarkhan with national dishes was prepared for guests. Ethnocultural centers showcased traditional costumes and musical performances of their peoples, joining in the nationwide celebration and sharing the atmosphere of warmth, renewal, and unity.
«This is a holiday shared by all peoples. Here it is celebrated not only by representatives from Eastern countries but also by those from Europe. Diplomats living in Kazakhstan respect our traditions and join us in celebrating national holidays,» said Tlegen Sadykov, member of the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan.
National sports also held a special place in the Nauryz Meiramy celebrations. Competitions on-site included weightlifting, kettlebell lifting, Kazakh kuresi (Kazakh wrestling), tug-of-war, and assyk atu.
«We place 15-16 assyks in a circle and take turns
knocking them out with our own assyk. If an assyk doesn’t leave the circle, its
distance is measured in steps. The player who knocks out the most wins. The key
is to make an accurate throw. I really enjoy this game, and many of my friends
play assyk atu too,» said competition participant Salamat
Akikat.
