Republic Day holds a high status as a national holiday in
the country’s calendar. October 25, 1990 is considered the starting point of
the emergence and subsequent development of an independent, secular, and legal
state. The Declaration of State Sovereignty, proclaimed 34 years ago, ensured
equal rights for all citizens, regardless of nationality, gender, social
status, or political and religious beliefs. This event contributed to the
formation of key civil society institutions, including political parties,
public, scientific and religious organizations, and trade unions. As a result,
experts note, a state has formed and confidently entered the global arena,
where representatives of various ethnic groups and faiths live in harmony,
preserving their traditions, cultures, languages, and religions.
«In 1990, the independent Muftiyat of Kazakhstan was
established. Subsequently, churches such as the Ascension and St. Nicholas
Cathedrals in Almaty were transferred to the Russian Orthodox Church. Citizens
were granted the right to practice their faith, and missionaries began arriving
in the country, marking the beginning of a spiritual renaissance in Kazakhstan.
Republic Day is the only national holiday in the country. Such national and
state holidays serve to bring together people of various faiths and ethnicities,
fostering dialogue and the future harmonious development of a tolerant and
peaceful Kazakhstan,» said Yelnar Berikbayev, Head of the Strategic Analysis Department
at the Kazakhstan Institute for Strategic Studies under the President of the
Republic of Kazakhstan.
