Declaration of State Sovereignty - foundation of independence

It has been 35 years since the adoption of the Declaration of State Sovereignty. Over the years, Kazakhstan has made remarkable progress. The principles laid out in the document have contributed, among other things, to strengthening the country’s economic independence. Over more than three decades, Kazakhstan’s foreign trade turnover has increased sixteenfold, while exports have grown by a factor of 15.5, with the number of partner countries reaching 195. The nation has also transitioned from reliance on raw materials toward the development of manufacturing, IT, logistics, and agriculture. On the geopolitical map, Kazakhstan has emerged as a key player both in the region and on the international stage, establishing itself as a reliable and predictable partner. The country is a member of the UN, SCO, CIS, OSCE, OTS, and other organizations, and continues to actively advance its initiatives on the global stage.

«Much of what we know today about modern Kazakhstan was reflected in the Declaration of State Sovereignty. This document was of great historical importance, as it proclaimed our independence — including independence in conducting both domestic and foreign policy. I would like to highlight the country’s functioning political system, which has undergone many transformations over the past 35 years. The reforms, most of which were adopted in 2022, are now being gradually implemented. We already have direct elections for rural governors, and elections for district mayors are gradually being held as part of the transition to new terms,» said Gulmira Tukanova, Chief Expert of the Strategic Analysis Department at the Kazakhstan Institute for Strategic Studies under the President of Kazakhstan.
