Beyond the Classroom: Summer activities for children

Not all families can afford a summer vacation or even just go to the countryside. What children are supposed to do, if their parents are at work, and they are all by themselves now? The answer is to join a hobby club. Four new training centers opened in the capital of Kazakhstan in 2022. One of them is located on Nurzhol Boulevard.

This is a dombyra class. Interest in the well-known Kazakh musical traditional instrument has substantially increased in recent years. Schoolchildren find it difficult to play, but this only whets their appetite, they say.

“I already have two groups that have been attending my club for a month now. A senior group are kids aged 10 to 15, a junior – 5 to 9,” said tutor Bekzat Prilepessov.

There are 11 clubs in total, including in aeromodelling, boxing, and choreography. The center is designed for 1,500 children. Is there enough room for everyone? The demand for extracurricular activities is very high.

“There are a lot of children who want to join. We are still preparing the lists. By September, we will work at 100 percent. Four clubs are functioning now, including dombyra, robotics and blogging,” shared tutor Berik Tuyamashev.

The Schoolchildren’s Palace in Nur-Sultan offers nearly 100 clubs. It provides preschool education to more than 12,000 children. Foreign children attend classes as well.

“These kids like national patterns. Girls even made some items in the national style and sent them to America, gave souvenirs to their friends and relatives,” said tutor Roza Seitzhanova.

92 schools in the capital opened school camps for elementary grades. As such, another 93,000 children were involved in extracurricular activities. It is planned to create two Community centers in remote areas of the city, in the villages of Zheleznodorozhny and Koktal.
