AIF 2025 experts: Kazakhstan could become world’s breadbasket

The global food system needs to be transformed. This is the only way to respond to global challenges related to climate change. New solutions should include sustainable agricultural technologies, digital developments for advancing logistics and expanding sales markets, as well as increasing the productivity of agricultural output. Kazakhstan has these opportunities and can also become a global supplier of agricultural products. This opinion was shared at the Astana International Forum (AIF) by Maximo Torero, Chief Economist of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

«The challenge right now is the weather, of course, changes in weather, and how we can bring varieties that are resistant to extreme climate conditions, especially the cold here. I think it is a great opportunity to bring the regional and international players to discuss topics which are so important, especially on water, which we are going to focus on in a session because water is an essential element and one of the main challenges we will face in the future,» Torero said.

Strength lies in integration and in finding common solutions through open and honest dialogue. The AIF has been an example of the effectiveness of this approach for years now, experts say. It is here that captivating ideas emerge, opening up new opportunities for effective solutions.

«We are currently witnessing a significant rethinking of how economic relations between different countries are structured, and there are many positive developments, including in Central Asia. It was important to hear that global leaders see great potential in Kazakhstan — a large country that can play a leading role, including in matters of security, particularly food security,» noted Andrei Mikhnev, World Bank Resident Representative in Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan.
