Kazakhstan is one of the first countries in the world to
voluntarily renounce its nuclear arsenal. These and other initiatives play a
key role in the work of the United Nations (UN), which celebrates its 80th
anniversary this year. A scientific and practical conference in Almaty was
dedicated to this occasion, as well as to the 33rd anniversary of Kazakhstan’s
accession to the organization. During the meeting, experts emphasized that UN
membership has enabled Kazakhstan to take an active stance on the most pressing
international issues of our time. In 2017–2018, the country was a member of the
UN Security Council, where it raised critical issues related to maintaining
global peace and stability. Conference participants noted that Kazakhstan remains
engaged in peacekeeping missions, actively promotes the Sustainable Development
Goals, and initiates various new projects.
«We have around 18 agencies here, including UNESCO and UNHCR.
Each has a different mandate and addresses a wide range of issues related to
sustainable development, including the economy, social sphere, and refugee issues.
As a regional hub, Almaty in many ways demonstrates its role as a gateway to
Central Asia,» noted Ambassador-at-Large and Head of the Representative Office
of the Kazakh Foreign Ministry in Almaty Zhanibek Abdrashov.
