AI to be introduced in Kazakhstan’s railway sector

Kazakhstan is continuing the digital transformation of its railway sector. Information on key transport infrastructure assets in the country will be consolidated into a unified data repository known as a data lake. On this basis, an intelligent Smart Rail platform will be implemented, using artificial intelligence and big data analytics technologies. It is expected that algorithms will analyze data from sensors on railway tracks, as well as from locomotives and railcars, predict transport risks, optimize routes, and simultaneously improve service quality and the efficiency of the entire logistics chain. The government notes that the introduction of digital technologies will increase Kazakhstan’s transit potential and strengthen its position as one of the largest transport and logistics hubs in Eurasia. Global experience has already demonstrated the effectiveness of AI-based solutions in the transport sector.

«Many countries around the world, such as China and Japan, along with the European Union, are actively implementing digital solutions and artificial intelligence in the transport sector. These are used to optimize train schedules, reduce downtime, increase capacity, and improve the quality of network maintenance. The Ministry of Transport, in collaboration with Kazakhstan Temir Zholy, must take measures by the end of this year to create a data lake that will enable real-time management of the entire transport and logistics chain,» said Kazakh Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov.
