UN’s 80th anniversary marked in Astana

A postage stamp marking the United Nations’ 80th anniversary has been issued in Kazakhstan. The presentation took place in Astana. The stamp was created with the participation of local artists and the Organization’s specialists. According to the designers, it symbolizes the Organization’s key goals - maintaining peace and security, as well as developing international cooperation. The stamp also features traditional Kazakh ornaments.


Kazakhstan became a member of the United Nations 33 years ago. Over the years, the country has maintained fruitful cooperation with the Organization. Kazakhstan remains committed to the UN Charter, as well as to the goals and principles of sustainable development - a point emphasized by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. Speaking at the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, the Head of State once again underscored the importance of the Organization in addressing global challenges. UN Resident Coordinator in Kazakhstan Sarangoo Radnaaragchaa stressed the importance of joint efforts to achieve sustainable development and the high level of partnership. Today, 27 UN agencies and institutions operate in the country, and the UN Regional Centre for Sustainable Development Goals for Central Asia and Afghanistan functions in Almaty.


«Cooperation is excellent. Kazakhstan is leading in many initiatives. Kazakhstan is leading also on primary healthcare together with WHO and many other initiatives. For example, Aral Sea project that we are going to implement in coming years. And it includes also Uzbekistan and other Central Asian countries in order to improve environment that has direct impact on health of the people,» noted Skender Syla, Head of WHO Country Office in Kazakhstan.

 

A highlight of the event was the concert entitled Music for Global Goals. It featured classical and contemporary works by Kazakh and international composers.
