The launch of the UN Regional Centre for the Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs) for Central Asia and Afghanistan in Almaty is a
testament to Kazakhstan’s growing role on the global stage and the importance
of continued regional development. This view is shared by international
experts, who note that Almaty has effectively become a Central Asian hub for
political dialogue and decision-making. Afghanistan is also included in the
dialogue, as long-term peace and sustainable development in the country are crucial
to ensuring overall regional stability.
«Cooperation between Afghanistan and Central Asian countries
will mark the first full-fledged regional partnership and is expected to have a
positive impact on all participants in the dialogue at the international level.
This achievement is important for the entire region, as the commitment of
Central Asian countries to the SDGs plays a key role in ensuring regional
stability,» said Almaz Tazhybai, Director of the Center for Public Policy
Analysis, the Kyrgyz Republic.
The significance of the centre’s opening was also
highlighted by global media. China’s Xinhua news agency called the event an
important milestone in Kazakhstan’s cooperation with the UN and its efforts to
promote sustainable development in the region. The European news platform EU
Reporter emphasized António Guterres’ remark that the opening of the first SDG
Centre in Central Asia is a landmark achievement for the entire region.
Euronews, also quoting the UN Secretary-General, noted that the regional centre
demonstrates how strong bonds among the region’s leaders can translate into
deeper economic integration - thereby strengthening Central Asia’s role on the
global stage.
