A dictionary of idioms in Kazakh, Russian, and English was
presented today in Astana. Released to mark the 30th anniversary of the
Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan, the book has a print run of 2,000 copies
and offers a unique opportunity to gain a better understanding of the Kazakh
language and explore its rich and expressive idioms. Its author, Kamal
Alpeissova, a member of the Union of Writers of Kazakhstan and a translator,
has compiled over a thousand vivid proverbs and idiomatic expressions. According
to the linguist, these idioms will undoubtedly aid in language learning. The
book has already become a valuable tool for students preparing for
international exams and aims to expand the use of the state language, including
in intercultural communication. An online version of the dictionary is
currently in development.
«During my trip to the U.S., I met talented young people and
was truly impressed - they were comparing English proverbs with Kazakh ones, and
that inspired me to come up with a new idea. That’s how the book was born. The
first parts feature Kazakh-Russian idioms, and the third part presents their
English equivalents. I was assisted by my student, Merey Malikova, a graduate
of the University of East Anglia in Norwich and a master’s degree holder.
Readers open the dictionary, see familiar sayings, and immediately start
comparing them with their English equivalents. Many have noted that knowing
such idioms helps when taking the IELTS exam,» noted the author of the
dictionary Kamal Alpeissova.
