Mikhail Golovatyuk, a 97-year-old veteran from Oskemen, is
the youngest living frontline soldier in his city. Drafted into military
service at just 16, he had to grow up even earlier during the difficult pre-war
period. In 1943, Mikhail, along with other boys, was sent to construct a
railway from Irkutsk to Lake Baikal, working entirely by hand. A year later, he
entered sniper school, eventually concluding his military service in Manchuria.
Despite his age, Mikhail Yakovlevich remains in good spirits and strives to lead
an active lifestyle. He considers his greatest achievement to be living honestly,
guided by conscience.
«I wish you well, success in all your endeavors, and
well-being. But well-being must be earned. Be honest, humane, and a patriot of
your country. And work tirelessly,» said World War II veteran Mikhail
Golovatyuk.
