Situation in Afghanistan discussed at meeting of EU and Central Asia Special Envoys

A meeting of the EU and Central Asia Special Envoys for Afghanistan was held in Almaty. The event participants confirmed their joint desire to build a peaceful, stable and prosperous state. In his speech, Special Representative of the President of Kazakhstan for International Cooperation Erzhan Kazykhan made proposals on strengthening security and sustainable development in the region in cooperation with the EU. In this context, the meeting participants welcomed the renewed mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan.

“Kazakhstan plays a special role in Central Asia. Kazakhstan and Afghanistan have established very good relations. By that I also mean cultural and trade relations. Kazakhstan is constantly providing humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan. The meeting is attended by representatives of five Central Asian countries. We have held a dialogue today on the development of Afghanistan and how we can support that country,” said Tomas Niklasson, EU Special Envoy for Afghanistan.

“The dialogue continues and ways to address these issues are being considered. First of all, of course, these are socio-economic and security issues. Well, and actually with whom we should conduct this dialogue. As the diplomat working in Afghanistan, I’d like to say that the increased pressure leads to more problems. There are different forces - moderate, more radical, conservative and, unfortunately, extremist organizations,” said Alimkhan Yessengeldiyev, Kazakh Ambassador to Afghanistan.
