Senators of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan discussed ways to solve the problems of the shallowing of the Aral Sea and the pertained environmental and social impact. The meeting took place in Aral district of Kyzylorda region, where the senator Maulen Ashimbayev stressed the importance of solving the problems of the Aral Sea area for both countries. He noted that Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan need to accelerate the second phase of the Syr Darya Control and Northern Aral Sea project, which includes a large range of new tasks, to maintain the sea level.
“Heads of our states regularly highlight the need and urgency of solving the Aral Sea issue, as well as the rational use of transboundary water resources. The once unique Aral reservoir today is a huge environmental problem and a challenge for the states of the Aral Sea area. At the same time, it is an opportunity for cooperation and use of best practices and technologies in order to revive it,” said Maulen Ashimbayev, Chairperson of Senate, Upper House of Kazakh Parliament.
