President instructs to review Turkey’s experience in construction of Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant

Kassym-Jomart Tokayev instructed to study comprehensively the experience of Turkey in the construction of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant. The launch of the first power unit of this nuclear power plant is scheduled for the end of 2023. The day before, a regular meeting of the Supreme Council for Reforms was held under the chairmanship of the President, which was mainly focused on measures to develop safe nuclear and hydrogen energy in the country. The Head of State referring to the IAEA data, stressed that nuclear energy accounts for about 10 percent of the global electricity generating capacity, which makes this sector the fourth largest energy generating source after coal, gas and hydropower.

“Nuclear energy generates more than a third of the total amount of low-carbon electricity, reducing annual CO2 emissions by approximately two billion tonnes, which is equivalent to the emissions of 400 million cars. At the same time, the uncertainty associated with various factors is quite high regarding the future of nuclear power. Nevertheless, it is evident that in a down of the current energy crisis and the volatility of energy prices, the issues of using peaceful nuclear energy are on the agenda of many governments,” Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said.
