The Pavlodar Maidan Zholy search party is embarking on a new
expedition. A total of three trips are planned, covering two countries -
Belarus and Russia. The group intends to continue searching for Kazakh soldiers
who went missing during the war. For the first time in its history, the group
will follow the route of the Kuril landing operation, conducted in August 1945
as part of the Soviet-Japanese War, when Soviet troops landed on Shumshu Island.
One of the key missions of the expedition will be to deliver Kazakh soil to a
mass grave where Rakhman Zhaibossynov, a soldier who died in battle in the
Mogilev region of Belarus, is buried.
«My mother has passed away, but it was her dream to find the
burial place of her father. We discovered my grandfather’s grave just a few
years ago thanks to a search effort. I requested that a handful of Kazakh soil
be brought to the mass grave where my grandfather, Rakhman Zhaibossynov, is
buried,» said Akylzada Kenzhebayeva, granddaughter of Rakhman Zhaibossynov.
«Over the course of 15 years, the remains of 231 soldiers, Soviet
soldiers and officers, have been recovered. Many of our Kazakh soldiers have
been identified and commemorated, with more than 20 monuments erected,
including 26 busts of Heroes of the Soviet Union who were born in Kazakhstan,
as well as other memorials. This year, there are plans to name School No. 8 in
Belarus after Hero of the Soviet Union Mikhail Maksimovich Katayev,» said Alexander
Shitov, commander of Maidan Zholy search party.
