On October 25,
Kazakhstan celebrates a national holiday - Republic Day. On this day in 1990,
the Declaration of State Sovereignty was adopted by the Supreme Soviet of the
Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic. This pivotal document paved the way for
Kazakhstan’s independence. It is noteworthy that last year, for the first time
in 13 years, Kazakh citizens celebrated this significant holiday, which was
reinstated at the initiative of the country’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.
According to experts, today, this day symbolizes the development of the
sovereign nation.
“The Declaration
itself served as the fundamental document in which the main principles of
Kazakhstan’s statehood are enshrined. Its adoption marks a significant
milestone in the establishment of an independent state. It laid the foundation
for the formation of our sovereignty. This document became the basis of
national legislation, with its provisions reflected in the 1993 Constitution,” Omirzak
Ozgaiuly, History PhD holder, said.
“The Republic Day
and Independence Day are very closely connected, so when we celebrate the
Republic Day, it is directly linked to our Independence. Thus, our youth should
respect, value and actively participate in this event,” Almat Absalikov, chief expert
of the National Center of Manuscripts and Rare Books, said.
