The number of Kazakh films are gaining
recognition at international film festivals. This includes the domestic drama «Talaq»
(The Divorce), which won at the 26th Shanghai International Film Festival
(SIFF) Golden Cup Award ceremony. This year, the event featured 50 movies from
29 countries. The jury members commended the Kazakh film for its remarkably
delicate blend of comedy, farce, and tragedy, as well as an insightful
reflection of societal realities. The film, set in the steppe in the 1920s,
took 10 years to create. Film director Daniyar Salamat addresses pressing
issues such as changes in women’s marital status and their roles in society. Also,
the movie won the Best Actress category.
