More than 4,000 people moved to Kazakhstan for permanent residency in the first quarter of this year. This is a third more than before the pandemic, and twice as much as last year. Half of the new immigrants arrived from Uzbekistan.
Russia takes the second place in terms of the number of immigrants. According to the Bureau of National Statistics, people increasingly arrive from other Asian countries as well. In the first three months of this year, six times more citizens of Turkmenistan moved to Kazakhstan, four times more arrived from Mongolia, and twice as many from China and Tajikistan as compared to the same period last year. It also became known which regions of the country foreign nationals choose most often. Over 50 percent of Uzbek citizens are registered in Mangystau region, the rest – in the southern regions of the country. Those who come from Russia most often choose the two main cities of Kazakhstan – Almaty and Nur-Sultan. More than half of all immigrants who moved to Kazakhstan indicated themselves as Kazakhs by ethnicity, 15 percent – as Russians and 7 percent – as Karakalpaks, the Bureau reported. The Chinese, Persian, Chuvash, Mari, Dargin and representatives of other ethnicities also move to Kazakhstan.
