New group of Przewalski’s horses arrives in Kazakhstan

A new group of Przewalski’s horses has arrived in Kazakhstan. Four horses were transported by a special cargo flight from the Czech Republic to the Kostanai region on June 1 and were immediately transferred to the Altyn Dala State Nature Reserve. A second flight carrying four more horses is expected to arrive from Berlin in four days. Przewalski’s horses (known locally as kerkulan) will undergo an adaptation period under the supervision of specialists at the reintroduction center before being released into their natural habitat. Historically, Przewalski’s horses inhabited the territory of Kazakhstan. The first groups were reintroduced two years ago. In total, Kazakhstan plans to receive 40 horses by 2029. The restoration of the Przewalski’s horse population is being carried out as part of international programs.

«Based on our observations, the horses have adapted well. Immediately after being released from their transport crates, they began moving freely around the enclosure, exploring their new surroundings, grazing, and feeding on local vegetation. They appear to be in good condition. According to the regulations, the horses must remain in quarantine during their first year. Throughout this period, they will remain under close supervision by our team and veterinarianssaid Kanat Batyrkhanuly, specialist at the Kazakh Biodiversity Conservation Association.
