A new geographical indication has
been registered in Kazakhstan. According to spokesperson for the country’s Ministry
of Justice Talgat Uali, a company producing bakery products will be named after
Sairam, a major medieval city along the Great Silk Road, enabling its promotion
and recognition. It is noteworthy that the country has registered a total of
five national geographical indications, including Almaty Aport, Turkistan ice
cream, Turkistan chocolate, Karagandy ice cream, and Sairam cake. The Ministry
of Justice shared other updates, such as the opportunity for legal protection
of trademarks. The process previously taking up to seven months will now be
completed within three months. Furthermore, judicial expertise for intellectual
property objects is being introduced in Kazakhstan.
“The establishment of this type
of expertise marks a significant step toward protecting intellectual property
objects, legally safeguarding investment activities, and enhancing the country’s
image. In this regard, the ministry has organized training for forensic experts
at the World Intellectual Property Organization’s Summer School. The forensic
research methodology of designations registered as means of individualization,
applied for registration, as well as those used without registration, has been
developed to determine the presence or absence of similarity to the extent of
confusion,” Uali said.
