Nauryznama Decade wraps up in Kazakhstan

Today, Kazakhstan marks the final day of the Nauryznama Decade. From March 14 to 23, each day was dedicated to a specific theme or value, reflecting the richness and diversity of Kazakh culture and society. On March 23, the country observes Tazaru Kuni - Cleansing Day, highlighting the importance of ecological balance and responsible environmental stewardship. A nationwide environmental campaign was also launched in Almaty, with 19,000 new saplings set to be planted across the city’s streets. And this is just the beginning: by year-end, the city will be adorned with over half a million trees, including lindens, ashe trees, pines, and silver maples. By 2030, an additional 2.5 million trees and shrubs are planned for planting.

«Maple trees grow quickly and are low-maintenance, making them perfect for city squares. Spruce and oak act as our «round-the-clock filters», cleaning the air year-round. Poplars provide abundant greenery, especially if you choose the non-fluffy varieties. But the true champion is the linden tree — it can absorb up to 99% of toxic pollutants from urban air,» said Ainur Seilkhan, ecologist and international expert.

«Lately, I’ve noticed a lot of work in Almaty to plant large trees and green the city. I’m glad this improves the city’s environment, and it’s especially nice to enjoy the shade during the hot summer. Planting trees is vital for future generations — we plant them now, but our children and grandchildren will reap the benefits,» said Zhakan Tugelbayev, resident of Almaty.
