The unique rock-cut mosques of Mangystau may soon be
inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The initiative to advance the
nomination of these sacred sites was launched following an instruction by
President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev during a meeting of the National Kurultai in
Atyrau. Since then, specialists have prepared a nomination dossier supported by
scientific research, conducted an evaluation mission, and obtained a technical
assessment from international experts. First Deputy Head of the Presidential
Administration of Kazakhstan Erlan Karin shared the update on social media.
According to Karin, the «Rock Mosques and Associated Sacred Sites of
Mangystau» nomination will be considered at the 48th session of the UNESCO World Heritage
Committee, currently underway in South Korea. The session has brought together
around 3,000 delegates from 196 countries. Over ten days, the Committee will
review 30 new nominations for inscription. Karin said the decision on the
Mangystau sites will be one of the most significant events for Kazakhstan.
