Kazakhstan to set up 1.4 GW of green energy capacity by 2027

Seven renewable energy projects are now being implemented in Kazakhstan. To date, 130 facilities, including wind, solar, hydroelectric, and bioelectric power plants, are operating in the country, with 15 more facilities with a capacity of 276 MW planned to be commissioned in 2023. In the first half of the year, the volume of electricity generated by alternative energy facilities totaled 3.35 billion kWh, or about six percent of the total volume of electricity generation. In his state-of-the-nation address, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said that another 1.4 gigawatts of green energy capacity will be commissioned in Kazakhstan by 2027. The structure of the country’s energy balance will inevitably change. Therefore, it is necessary to improve approaches to the management of the entire energy sector, the Head of State emphasized. He also outlined the necessity to develop hydrogen generation.

“The expansion of generation facilities serves as the basis for technology transfer and the localization of production in power engineering, as well as the creation of the battery industry. Fortunately, we have abundant raw materials. New solutions are needed in the field of creating balancing capacities and energy storage systems. The transition to carbon neutrality can be accelerated by greenhouse gas emissions trading. The Government and businesses should seize the opportunities in these areas,” Tokayev stated.
