Kazakhstan to launch new renewable energy projects this year

Wind and solar power plants are planned to be built in the Turkistan region. An intergovernmental agreement has already been concluded with China on these two major projects, according to the Energy Ministry. The construction of two additional wind farms is ongoing with the involvement of large international companies. These alternative energy facilities should provide 30 percent of energy capacity. In total, nine more renewable energy projects are scheduled to launch this year. Currently, Kazakhstan operates 156 such facilities with a combined capacity of over 3 gigawatts. Through its auction bidding mechanism, 91 projects are at various stages of development. The goal is to increase the share of eco-friendly energy sources.

«In 2025, it is planned to increase the share of renewable energy sources to six percent, and by 2030 – to 15 percent. In 2024, energy production from alternative sources reached 7.5 billion kilowatt-hours, which corresponds to 6.4 percent of total energy production. These are the results for the first half of the year. In the future, we plan to increase this figure by 12-13 percent compared to last year,» said Kazakh Vice Minister of Energy Sungat Yessimkhanov.
