Kazakhstan to establish National Spatial Data Infrastructure

The National Spatial Data Infrastructure will be established in Kazakhstan. This was spelled out in the bill on geodesy and cartography, which was approved by Kazakh senators today. The document was presented by Bagdat Mussin, Minister of Digital Development, Innovations and Aerospace Industry. According to him, its primary objectives are focused on providing Kazakhstan with a highly accurate geodetic reference system. The latter will form the basis for a single digital mapping platform that will record newly constructed objects, whether it is a building or a road. The country's outdated coordinate reference system from 1942 requires modernization, the minister stressed.

“This infrastructure is the first large-scale project in the history of geodesy and cartography, and it plays an important role in the digital transformation of the country. The project allows to have unified, developed, and up-to-date spatial data and to integrate fragmented cadastres and information systems into a single information space,” he added.

“This infrastructure ensures consumer access to electronic data and its effective use. We are confident that in the future, comprehensive, accurate spatial data, geodesy and mapping systems will have a positive impact on the speed of information processing and rational decision making in economic and public administration sectors,” said Maulen Ashimbayev, Chairperson of the Senate, the Upper House of the Kazakh Parliament.
