Kazakhstan to digitize over 6,000 canals in 2026

Kazakhstan plans to digitize more than 6,000 water channels and achieve full digital coverage of all the country’s hydraulic structures by the end of the year. According to the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation, the National Water Resources Information System already covers around 22,000 sites, including more than 17,000 rivers, about 4,000 lakes, and 60% of the country’s hydraulic structures. Work has now begun in the southern regions to automate over 100 canals, which irrigate around 65,000 hectares of agricultural land. Similar work is underway on another 270 canals spanning more than 1,100 kilometers. Documentation is being developed to implement modern water metering systems on 264 additional canals. The ministry notes that the introduction of digital tools will enable the creation of a comprehensive water resources management system and enhance economic resilience.

«A unified national water balance will also be established, enabling comparisons of actual water flow, reservoir storage, and water consumption across different water management areas. Special attention is being paid to the safety of hydraulic structures and water bodies. At the same time, data from satellite monitoring and hydrological stations are being integrated,» said Ramazan Abdikarimov, Chief Expert at the Digitalization Department of the Kazakh Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation
