Kazakhstan will develop long-term plans to advance its
nuclear sector. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev highlighted this during an
extended government meeting. He emphasized the need to accelerate the construction
of the country’s first nuclear power plant (NPP) to address growing energy
shortages and create a broader nuclear cluster. Additionally, an analysis is
needed to determine the most suitable locations for future NPPs. The goal is
for the country to achieve complete self-sufficiency in electricity and create
reserves at a level of 15–20%. This necessity is also underscored by members of
the Mazhilis, the Lower House of the Kazakh Parliament. According to them, the
energy produced by such plants is not only cheaper but also more
environmentally friendly than other sources. This is a crucial objective for
ensuring the country’s progress.
«We support the Head of State’s initiative; the construction
of a nuclear power plant is a step toward creating new economic relations in
Kazakhstan. We consider this proposal to be strategically correct. There should
be a nuclear power plant in the country, and President Tokayev mentioned
several of them, and we agree with this. However, we need cheap electricity
today. The Head of State has set a clear task of doubling GDP by 2029. To
achieve this, 15 large factories are being built, and for their construction
and operation, we need cheap domestic electricity. Unfortunately, we are
currently importing electricity,» said Mazhilis member Yerlan Sairov.
