Kazakhstan strengthens international cooperation in energy efficiency

Kazakhstan intends to reduce the hydrocarbon footprint of residential buildings. To achieve this, the country is expanding cooperation with international agencies. Among its partners is the German Energy Agency (dena). Its specialists have already conducted research and noted that Kazakhstan has significant potential to improve energy efficiency in the housing sector. This can be achieved through the use of modern technologies and thermal insulation materials. This topic was discussed in Astana at the international energy saving forum. Experts noted that over the past ten years, Kazakhstan’s GDP energy intensity has decreased by one-fourth, while domestic enterprises have invested about 500 billion tenge in energy-saving technologies. The current focus is on improving the energy efficiency of residential and administrative buildings.

«About 47% of total final energy consumption is accounted for by buildings. As part of the forum, we specifically organized two sessions where international experts will share their experiences, including those from Germany, which implemented a large-scale renovation program, the modernization of old housing stock. This made it possible to improve the energy efficiency class of such buildings,» noted Yeldos Abakanov, Chairman of the Board, Electric Power and Energy Saving Development Institute.

«In cooperation with the Kazakh Ministry of Construction, we developed a master plan for energy efficiency measures several years ago. It included more than 100 specific measures across five different sectors. These measures were scheduled over a certain period of time, and, of course, there are specific support mechanisms provided by the state. From our perspective, only such a comprehensive approach can ensure improved energy efficiency,» said Elena Metzger, Project Director for Central Asia, Türkiye, South Caucasus at German Energy Agency dena.

According to experts, fostering an energy-saving culture and introducing energy-efficient solutions in construction will be among the key factors driving the sustainable growth of Kazakhstan’s economy.
