Kazakhstan’s rail freight turnover reaches 272 billion tonnes-kilometers

Cargo transportation using terminal complexes is becoming increasingly popular. In this regard, Kazakhstan is constantly expanding its capacity to boost cargo flow through its corridors, as reported to President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev by the Сhairman of the Board of the Kazakhstan Temir Zholy national railway company, Nurlan Sauranbayev. He informed the Head of State about the start of terminal construction in Almaty, Azerbaijan’s port of Alat, Budapest, and near Moscow. A container hub is also being built in Aktau in collaboration with the Lianyungang port. Additionally, the launch of the Kazakh-Chinese terminal in the dry port of Xi’an has increased the transit of goods from China along the Trans-Caspian route. As a result, last year, a record 32 million tonnes of cargo were transported, which is 13 percent more than in 2023. Overall, container transit grew by almost nine percent. The operational cargo turnover reached 272 billion tonnes-kilometers.

«Special attention was given to the construction of large-scale railway projects. The construction of the second line on the Dostyk-Moyinty section and the Almaty bypass line will be completed this year. The expansion of terminal networks and the implementation of digital solutions are ongoing. The national company will continue its efforts to address tasks aimed at developing Kazakhstan’s transport and transit potential,» noted Nurlan Sauranbayev, Chairman of the Kazakhstan Temir Zholy national company.
