The population of Kazakhstan may exceed 27 million people by 2050. Such a forecast was made by the Workforce Development Center. The analysis was carried out on the basis of last year's death toll, birth and migration rates. According to the provided data, even in the worst case scenario, the population may reach at least 23,500,000 Kazakh citizens. It bears noting that to date over 19,000,000 people live in the country. In the next 30 years the cities of Shymkent and Nur-Sultan will become leaders in population growth. It is expected that the population in these two cities will increase by two to 2.5 times. Almaty has also entered the Top 3 as the number of its residents is projected to increase by approximately 70 percent. The country’s western regions will witness a positive demographic boom as well, whereas, in the eastern, northern and central Kazakhstan the population, on the contrary, is expected to decrease. Experts attribute this to mass migration of able-bodied citizens to other developed states with the aim to make money.
“Why are we doing this analysis? Firstly, with the aim of monitoring the situation on the labor market, for example, in which regions there is a threat of mass outflow of young people, and in which, on the contrary, the population will decline and additional support measures will be needed. In general, we need to understand the Concept of Migration Policy and take appropriate measures aimed at correcting any unfavorable trends which can already be observed,” Dmitry Shumekov, Director of Forecasting Department at the Workforce Development Center, said.
