Kazakhstan intends to increase international internet traffic transit

Kazakhstan intends to increase the transit of international internet traffic. Currently, the country’s share in the process stands at around 1.5%, with plans to raise it to 5% by 2027. To this end, the country is implementing large-scale infrastructure projects aimed at boosting the capacity of international connections by more than half. Among these initiatives are the construction of a fiber-optic line along the bottom of the Caspian Sea and the West-East hyperhighway, stretching over 4,000 kilometers. A key component of the digital ecosystem is data centers. There are currently two state and 14 regional centers in the country, with nine more expected to be built within the next five years. Thanks to the introduction of satellite technologies, Kazakhstan has become a digital hub for satellite communications. Within the next two years, satellite internet will be available in more than 500 sparsely populated villages. In 2026, the Direct-to-Cell service is planned to be launched, providing mobile coverage across the entire country, including remote regions. Over the past three years, more than one trillion tenge has been invested in the telecommunications and communications sector.

«It is important to note a significant increase in internet traffic consumption this year. It is expected to double compared to last year. Overall, the development of the sector is being carried out within the National Project Affordable Internet for 2024–2027. By the end of 2027, the goal is to ensure 100% internet coverage of the population. Internet speeds are projected to exceed 100 megabits per second, while optical communication lines will be extended to 90% of rural settlements,» noted Kazakh Deputy Prime Minister – Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Development Zhaslan Madiyev.
