Kazakhstan becomes new center of medical tourism

Kazakhstan is becoming a new center of attraction for medical tourism. Over the past five years, the flow of foreign patients to the country has increased fivefold. The number of people seeking treatment in Astana alone has quadrupled compared to 2022. Overall, the geography of clients has expanded to 50 countries. These figures were announced by the Health Ministry at an international conference in the capital. According to the ministry, people come to Kazakhstan for quality healthcare, modern technologies, and, of course, affordable prices. Diagnostics and surgeries here are five to ten times cheaper than, for example, in the U.S. and European countries. Kazakhstan is also actively introducing innovative technologies and developing such areas as cardiac surgery, transplantation, and oncology.

«We are witnessing explosive growth from countries that are themselves recognized leaders in medical tourism. The number of visitors from China has increased 24 times, from India - 40 times, and from Türkiye, our close neighbor, friend, and in many ways a model for developing medical tourism - has tripled. Medical tourists are arriving from Europe, the U.S., East and Central Asia, as well as from neighboring and distant countries. This means only one thing – we can offer exactly what patients need,» noted Kazakh Health Minister Akmaral Alnazarova.

The high quality of Kazakhstan’s medical services is evidenced by international recognition. Nine domestic clinics have received Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation, and the national accreditation system fully complies with global standards. Today, 80 types of high-tech medical care are available in the country, from robot-assisted surgeries to proton and gamma therapy. Moreover, Kazakhstan’s cardiac surgery service ranks among the world’s top 30.

«In recent years, the largest number of patients have come from Russia, Uzbekistan, the Kyrgyz Republic, and Tajikistan, as well as from Europe and other distant countries. Currently, most of our patients are from Russia. Quality and price both matter, of course, but affordability plays the biggest role - even compared to Russia, the price of medical services here is lower,» said Rustem Tuleutayev, Chairman of the Board at the Research Institute of Cardiology and Internal Diseases.

Notably, the conference was attended by representatives of diplomatic missions, international organizations, leading medical experts, as well as agents and buyers from 13 countries. As a result, the Health Ministry signed cooperation agreements with the Ministry of Tourism and Sports and the Kazakhstan Association of Medical Tourism.
