Kazakhstan and
Germany are set to implement a water resource management program. The Kazakh
Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation and the German Agency for International
Cooperation (GIZ) signed an agreement to develop measures aimed at enhancing
water use efficiency in the Central Asian region and adapting the Amu Darya and
Syr Darya river basins to climate change. Germany will offer financial support
in the form of grants, as well as provide experts and necessary equipment, and
will conduct training for local specialists. It bears noting that Kyrgyzstan,
Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan are also participating in this program.
The agreement will remain in effect until February 2027.
“We fully support
the work of the regional working group initiated with the support of the German
Agency for International Cooperation in discussing mutually agreed-upon
mechanisms for water-energy partnership. The questions currently being
addressed within your organization closely align with ours. I believe we should
learn to efficiently use our resources together. This serves the mutual
economic interests of each state,” said Nurzhan Nurzhigitov, Kazakh Minister of
Water Resources and Irrigation.
