Kazakh Senate approves law on Turkistan’s special status

Turkistan city will be granted special status. The Senate, the Upper House of the Kazakh Parliament, has approved the corresponding law, which provides for measures to preserve the city’s architectural appearance. They specifically regulate the height of new buildings near the Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi. More precisely, new constructions must be at least 100 meters away from the protected zone’s boundary and no taller than seven meters. The law aims not only to establish effective systems for managing and protecting historical and cultural monuments but also to promote national handicrafts. Additionally, certain provisions grant 37 new powers to the mayor’s office and Maslikhat. The latter, in particular, will be responsible for approving urban planning regulations and rules for shaping the city’s architectural appearance. The Ministry of National Economy provided further details on Turkistan’s development indicators in recent years.

«Over the past six years, Turkistan’s population has grown by an average of five percent per year, reflecting significant growth. Undoubtedly, this factor was taken into account. In 2018, targeted transfers from the national budget amounted to 13 billion tenge, while last year, they reached 72 billion tenge, marking a 5.5-fold increase. The city’s gross regional product (GRP) increased sixfold, industrial output rose tenfold, and the city’s own revenues surged fourteen times, showcasing the positive impact of these developments,» noted Kazakh Vice Minister of National Economy Arman Kassenov.
