Unique historical materials housed in the Archive of the President of Kazakhstan can be preserved for up to 500 years. A special archival insurance fund is being established to ensure document preservation. Using microfilming technology, archival backup copies are created without any loss of quality. For example, the original document has survived for decades. Before valuable materials are used or transferred to permanent storage, they must undergo acclimatization. Specialists carry out a full restoration process, including cleaning and strengthening the physical structure of both handwritten and typewritten documents. After processing, the materials are transferred to storage facilities. Conditions there meet international standards, with temperature, humidity, and document placement under constant monitoring.
«These are documents of critical importance to the state, and for this category an archival insurance fund is being established to transfer them onto microcarriers. This allows vast amounts of information to be preserved in a compact form, with a guaranteed storage period of up to 500 years,» said Aliya Mustafina, Director of the Kazakh President’s Archive.
Notably, the President’s Archive holds materials
covering key stages of Kazakhstan’s history and foreign policy. 90% of paper
documents have already been digitized. This directly addresses preservation
challenges: digitization of originals simplifies access to data, while rare
authentic documents are protected from physical deterioration. Responses to
inquiries from citizens and academic researchers are also provided online.
School students also engage with the President’s Archive. As part of the Archive
Space project, students are taught how to verify historical facts using primary
sources.
