Tenge turns 29 - the national currency of Kazakhstan was introduced on November 15, 1993 by the presidential decree. It is a symbol of the country’s economic independence, which has consolidated the foundations of statehood. The design of the national currency was developed by a group of Kazakh specialists; however the first banknotes were printed in the UK. The banknote factory in Kazakhstan was launched in 1995. The tenge design has changed several times. Initially the portraits of famous historical figures were printed on the banknotes, later they were replaced by images showing the achievements of the country's Independence, such as the pictures of the Baiterek Monument, Akorda Presidential Palace, Independence Monument and Kazakh Yeli Monument. At first, the tenge banknotes were issued in seven denominations, later on the new denominations of 10,000 and 20,000 tenge were also introduced. The banknotes and coins are of high quality. Tenge is valued both by collectors from many different countries and by professionals. Experts note the original design, quality and counterfeit protection.
