Kassym-Jomart Tokayev took part in a session of the Collective Security Council of the Collective Security Treaty Organization in Dushanbe. Presidents of Kazakhstan, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and the Armenian Prime Minister exchanged views on the situation in Afghanistan, as well as on international and regional security. President Tokayev expressed concern over the evolving situation in Afghanistan. In his view, the socio-economic status in the country is moving towards a humanitarian crisis. The President of Kazakhstan stated that CSTO member states will have to continue monitoring the activities of the new authorities in order to define a long-term strategic direction. Kassym-Jomart Tokayev stressed that the decision of the United Nations Security Council will be the main reference point for Kazakhstan.
“I propose to take concrete measures to coordinate actions and ensure interaction in relations with the new Afghan government. Our apparent priority is for the new Afghan authorities to fulfill their commitments to prevent the spread of the terrorist threat to neighboring countries and regions. The same applies to drug trafficking and illegal migration, the fight against which requires the collective will of all parties involved,” said Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, President of Kazakhstan.
