The fight against terrorist groups must continue until they are completely destroyed, said Russia’s Special Presidential Envoy for Syria Alexander Lavrentiev at a press conference following the international meeting of the “Astana format”. According to him, there can be no let-up in this direction. Today it is necessary to shift the focus from the issues of stabilizing the situation to humanitarian aid to the Syrian people, the speaker noted. This applies to both the transfer of food to them and the restoration of destroyed infrastructure. Many other participants of the session supported this position. The creation of an effective assistance mechanism in all parts of Syria is the main task of the international community.
“This is our position that we proposed to adhere to a year ago, when we supported the decision to extend the corresponding resolution on cross-border operations. The cross-border mechanism and the implementation of humanitarian aid is just part of the humanitarian assistance. The main focus was placed on the provision of support to the Syrian republic in the implementation of restoration of infrastructure facilities. This is the only way to alleviate the suffering of the civilian population and allow them to start their normal work activities,” Lavrentiev said.
The meeting participants commented on the restoration of the work of the constitutional committee in Geneva. Alexander Lavrentiev informed that this work should not be delayed and the next session of the sixth convocation is supposed to be held in the near future.
