The JOLDA contemporary dance theatre is representing
Kazakhstan at Avignon OFF, the world’s largest festival currently underway in
France. The troupe will present its original production, «Tamyr,» to European
audiences. Representatives of the international festival personally traveled to
Kazakhstan to evaluate independent theatres, ultimately selecting this work.
The performance explores the continuity of generations, conveyed through the
language of dance and live vocal accompaniment. Its musical elements and choral
arrangements draw inspiration from «bata,» – blessings and guidance. Founded in
2020, JOLDA began as a dance laboratory and has grown into a free stage space
that combines unique choreography, melodic music, and performance art.
«For me, this trip is, first and foremost, about whether we
can share our story with a French audience while also discovering unifying
threads — because the themes we express in our performances have no language or
nationality. They are eternal. These are the questions we ask ourselves, and we
want to share them with the audience in France, to hear their perspective, and
create some kind of dialogue,» said Zhanna Tulendy, head of JOLDA Dance
Theatre.
«The JOLDA dance theatre is a new trend, a movement for me.
As the name suggests, we are always searching, always on a journey. I love this
theatre. I feel some nervousness — after all, we are performing on behalf of
Kazakhstan, which carries a great responsibility. But I hope we succeed and
make it,» said Gulsaya Taurkhanova, performer at JOLDA Dance Theatre.
