In Astana, Kazakh soldiers who fought in the ranks of the
French resistance during World War II were posthumously honored. During a
solemn ceremony at the monument to General Charles de Gaulle, French Ambassador
to Kazakhstan Sylvain Guiaugue presented medals to the families of Kabysh
Omarov, Kadem Zhumaniyazov, and Ashimbek Istybayev. They, along with 300 other
compatriots, actively participated alongside French soldiers in the liberation
of the city of Toulouse and its surrounding areas from Nazi occupation. As the
head of the diplomatic mission emphasized, the courage and selflessness of
Kazakh soldiers will forever remain in the hearts of the French people.
«We pay such a solemn tribute to the families of the
Kazakhstanis partisans that helped us free our territory. So this is the first
time we can do it, so 80 years after. So this ceremony is really based on the
work of historians, embassies, ministries of defense, of foreign affairs and so
on. And this is another milestone in our bilateral relationship. It shows that
we have a longer history than we can think,» noted French Ambassador to
Kazakhstan Sylvain Guiaugué.
«For a very long time, we were unable to obtain any
information about our grandfather. He was a well-known figure both in France
and Spain. He took part in the French Resistance and helped liberate prisoners
of war from concentration camps in Germany. He spoke seven languages and was a
highly educated man. We are happy that this day of recognition has finally
come. We thank everyone who took part in preparing for this day,» said granddaughter
of K.Zhumaniyazov Arman Zhumaniyazova.
