State of emergency declared in Almaty city and Mangystau region

President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev signed a decree on the introduction of a state of emergency in Mangystau region and the city of Almaty in connection with the aggravation of the situation, the Akorda website reported. The state of emergency will last until January 19. As President Tokayev emphasized in his televised address, he hopes that citizens would act and behave reasonably.

“Dear compatriots! Once again, I appeal to you to be reasonable and not succumb to internal and external provocations, the euphoria of rallies and permissiveness. Calls to attack civilian and military offices are absolutely illegal. This is a crime that will be punished. The regime will not fall. But what we need is not conflict, but mutual trust,” Tokayev said.
