Ensuring round-the-clock monitoring of the
flood situation in the country, if necessary, taking measures to deploy
additional resources and forces, as well as creating protection for settlements
located along water bodies. These instructions were given to government
agencies by Kazakh Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov during a meeting of the national
headquarters on flood control coordination and elimination of consequences. Currently,
67% of the country’s territory is covered with snow. Due to warm and rainy
weather in March and April, flood risks are increasing. The high-risk zone
includes the East Kazakhstan, Karagandy, Akmola, North Kazakhstan, Kostanai, Aktobe,
Abai and Ulytau regions. The civil protection services are in full readiness.
According to the Ministry for Emergency Situations, their personnel exceed
37,000 people, with 13,000 units of special equipment, more than 4,000 water
pumping devices, and 640 watercraft. The ministry’s aircraft are also on
round-the-clock duty.
«Local authorities should take comprehensive
measures to prevent flooding in settlements. Water drainage structures,
bridges, and culverts must be cleared of ice and debris and be ready for the
passage of meltwater. Riverbeds must be cleaned and reinforced. A task force of
personnel and resources, including the necessary equipment, must be prepared in
flood-prone settlements. Evacuation sites must be identified and equipped with
all essential life-support resources,» Bektenov noted.
