Experts discuss outcomes of three years of President Tokayev’s reforms

The well-being of Kazakh citizens, the strengthening of sovereignty, and the enhancement of democratic institutions are the key objectives of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s reforms being implemented in Kazakhstan. The political transformations that have taken place over the past three years have laid the foundation for sustainable development and the formation of an effective public administration system, strengthening the society and fostering new political traditions. The results of three years of the Head of State’s reforms were summarized at the Kazakhstan Institute for Strategic Studies (KazISS) in Astana. Representatives of government agencies, MPs, heads of leading analytical centers, public figures, and experts took part in the discussions. According to them, in 2022, the country launched a significant program to recover illegally withdrawn assets, which is an important part of the fight against corruption and the restoration of social justice. About 1.7 trillion tenge were returned to the state revenue. These funds are being used for the construction of social facilities and addressing the consequences of floods. They also noted that Kazakhstan has liberalized its party and electoral legislation over these years. Two referendums were held, and the parliament has changed. It now includes six parties, forming full-fledged factions.

«These reforms embody the very philosophy and political will of the President. The reforms initiated were aimed at this goal - to gradually ease the burden without exposing society to risks or stress. The seven-year term, single tenure, and other constitutional aspects. A new formula has emerged: a strong President, an influential Parliament, and an accountable Government,» noted Aidos Sarym, member of the Mazhilis, the Lower House of the Kazakh Parliament.

«The political reforms that have taken place, first and foremost, have contributed to a certain liberalization of relations between citizens and government agencies. They have also provided new platforms for influencing political decision-making. The population supports the principles and values that have been emphasized over the years, particularly those related to law and order, justice, and the importance of labor. These ideas resonate widely, as evidenced by the results of our sociological research,» said Zhanar Sankhayeva, Head of the Political Research Department at the Kazakhstan Institute for Strategic Studies under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
