Experts discuss advantages of building nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan

The growth in industrial volumes, the launch of new projects, process automation, and urbanization are driving an uptick in resource consumption, particularly in electrical and thermal energy. According to the Kazakh Ministry of Energy, electricity consumption in Kazakhstan is projected to exceed 152 billion kilowatt-hours by 2035. Reliable energy sources are essential to meet these significant demands. In his interview with the Egemen Qazaqstan newspaper, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev emphasized that clean nuclear energy is crucial for the country. This is a fundamental issue for the future of Kazakhstan’s economy. Director General of Kazakhstan Nuclear Power Plants company Timur Zhantikin shares this opinion. According to him, a nuclear power plant will help the country address the energy shortages, fulfill commitments to carbon neutrality made by Kazakhstan, and ensure energy security and independence. Moreover, the country possesses the necessary potential for the operation of the facility, including natural uranium reserves and the production of nuclear fuel components.

“The time has come when the issue cannot be postponed any longer. Other energy sources are associated with certain limitations; we have limited hydro and gas resources. As for coal, it will gradually diminish. Renewable energy is an entirely different industry, serving as an integrated part, indicating that it does not substitute the primary source in any way. We cannot rely solely on coal; urgent diversification is necessary, especially given the limited time. Naturally, nuclear energy emerges as the second source for base generation,” said Zhantikin.

The decision regarding the construction of a nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan will be made by its citizens. The matter will be presented for consideration through a nationwide referendum, as emphasized by President Tokayev. Prior to this, extensive public hearings will take place, allowing Kazakh citizens to deliberate on expert arguments both for and against the project. Subsequently, through free expression of will, a well-considered decision will be made.
